Launch the new Surviving Abuse Website

During the recent years, we have compiled and produced resources while conducting projects specific to our consumers and persons with disabilities in general.  These resources have evolved into the launch of our 'Surviving Abuse' Website, and have fostered the development of new projects and gap identification in our region.  For example, the original 'In Our Shoes' manual evolved into one of our flagship programs, Directions, which is widely accepted as the standard for inclusion information delivery, community education and awareness training in the Thunder Bay Region.

We maintain final digital copies of these resources, as we still receive frequent requests for them.

In Our Shoes
Disability Etiquette and Sensitivity... A Guide to Positive Interactions

Compiled By: The Independent Living Resource Centre Thunder Bay, March 2003
Revised: June, 2004

Comfortable interaction in society can be achieved! Human beings have always had a tendency to regard others who appear different with suspicion. Acceptance comes with interaction that allows us to get to know each other. People with disabilities may look, move or behave differently, but we want the same things out of life as able-bodied people want: to be respected, loved, appreciated and to be productive members of society. We are people first.

This project originally was an information manual only, but its success quickly grew. Our Centre took on the issue more directly, by becoming community leaders in providing Disability Awareness Training.  Our training method has been sought out by many leading public service providers in our region for its matter-of-fact approach and comprehensive cross-disability content.  Persons attending a session of our Disability Awareness Training are given a copy of newly revised In Our Shoes Manual, on which the training was developed.  Book your organization for training today!

What to do When
A Manual for Women With Disabilities Who Have Been Abused

Compiled By: The Independent Living Resource Centre Thunder Bay, 2003.
Revised: 2005

Women are the subject of many types of violence and abuse: Women with disabilities can be even more vulnerable.  This resource manual began as a print version, which was made available through our Centre. While the manual is full of useful information for persons with disabilities who have been abused, it has been evolved into the final version, available online as a website 'Surviving Abuse'

Legal Literacy

Compiled By: The Independent Living Resource Centre Thunder Bay, June 2004
Revised: 2006

The Legal Literacy manual is best suited for persons with disabilities who may be in an abusive and/or violent situation and for service providers who work with them. It is a guide to the legal system that defines abuse, gives support, encouragement and information to survivors about their legal rights and options, and provides an overview of the Canadian Criminal Justice system and the laws that protect all citizens from abuse. At the completion of the final revision, a comprehensive training manual was produced: a resource guide for using and facilitating the Legal Literacy manual.

Both manuals are professionally printed and conveniently housed in a sturdy 3-ring binder. The manuals are accompanied by a professionally developed CD-ROM that contains the entire manual in PDF format within an easy to navigate interface. This final phase of the Legal Literacy manual is only available to order.

You can download and print a copy of the order form in PDF format. You will need to mail this form, along with your check or money order.

While the information in this manual is as accurate as possible, it is only intended as a guide. Any questions you may have regarding legal problems or issues should be directed to a member of the legal community.
